[OMO VALLEY, ETHIOPIA]
The Omo Valley presents some of the most isolated communities on our planet. The tribes people are colourful pastoralists with very unique customs. A visit is not for the faint-hearted.
Nowadays these communities are amply photographed and capturing a natural (or unposed) scene is a challenge. So spending time and engaging with each of the many tribes enables bonds to be borne and allow more natural opportunities to unfurl.
These young Karo boys, brothers, where keen to be photographed whilst showing me around their modest village.
Then a moment slips in where they stand candidly side-by-side above the Omo River. Looking across the Omo Valley a proud inner strength bursts from their chests and in that split second I compose one of many precious moments midst the Karo.
ABOUT THE OMO TRIBES
An honest account of the many tribes occupying the Omo Valley.
Life amongst the tribes off the Omo Valley is changing due to many factors, including infrastructure projects, government-sponsored relocation and under-developed tourism infrastructure leaving these beautiful cultures exposed.
Fortunately, advancements are being made - traditional customs are being researched and documented and education, potable water and medicine is becoming more accessible. I sense however each tribe’s nuances will be lost before they are better understood. Unfortunately, we will be left with these stories and photographs to reflect upon vanished community cultures.
